Week 4 Assignment #1

RTI is a new method being implemented in schools to help struggling readers. Up until now we relied on the discrepancy model. This was a traditional way of administering IQ tests and measuring the results based on the grade level of that student. There are several drawbacks to this method. Firstly, it relies solely on the students IQ results and takes no other factors into account. Secondly it takes many months for the student to get the necessary intervention as opposed to taking the proper action right away.

RTI increases the students likelihood of success by identifying the struggling students and getting them the help that they need right away. RTI starts with an initial screening to identify students who are at risk. This is done by doing about three assessments per year and measuring the students against a benchmark book or assessment. Those that score below the benchmark receive help. The help is given in small groups and help raise the students reading abilities.  The intervention is constantly monitored for success by administering weekly or bi weekly tests. These tests pick up even the slightest nuances and are thoroughly researched exams. Finally more specific individual intervention for students that are still struggling is implemented by a team of professionals.

RTI is extremely effective in the sense that it doesn’t allow students to struggle for months before getting the help they so badly need. It also allows for students to be seen as a whole and specific issues can be targeted. I would love to learn more specific details about how the actual intervention is implemented aside from the basic structure of how it works.

  1. I could imagine that if you work in a school that has this program, you will probably have to be trained in and learn exactly how to implement it.

  2. I would love to see a video on how it is implemented. I think that because it targets so many different areas, because of the weakness of the child I would imagine that the implementation is also different.

I wonder what these tests are like. We have also learned about the importance of testing being accurate and individualized...
