Week 9 Assignment #3

DIBELS is a general assessment given to early childhood readers to evaluate their reading achievements. On the other hand QRI5 is an assessment created for individual students.   It measures a specific students reading abilities as well as what mistakes they make. DIBELS is an early intervention assessment whereas QRI5 is not. DIBELS is a set of assessments that evaluates specific strategies that students may use to identify words. It zooms in to specific things that students may or may not be doing that leads to unsuccessful reading. DIBELS on the other hand is a set of assessments that measures the big ideas of early literacy skills. QRI5 and DIBELS both help teachers with whole class instruction. QRI5 helps teachers know the students exact abilities and struggles so that a customized lesson can be put together to accommodate the specific needs of her students. Week 7 Assignmnet #5

Assessing a student on these 4 areas really helped me put everything I read about into practice. The students had a very good grasp of print awareness. She was able to show me the front and back of the book as well as show me the names of the author and illustrator. She understood that the English language is made up of words and each word is made up of letters. When it came to phonics the student had a hard time matching sounds to groups of letters such as “th, ch, sh…” In terms of fluency the student is ok with words that are familiar to her, however when she hits a longer more difficult word she gets confused. Her reading is therefore choppy. Helpful Activities: Print awareness: - Have students study the actual structure of the book such as the title, author, table of contents etc. -Encourage preschool children to play with print.
